On Tuesday, the 19th of February, I was at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, with sweaty palms and trembling hands, waiting for my flight. It was the first time I’d ever fly all alone and I didn’t have the slightest idea what to expect when I would arrive on my destination. I calmed myself down just a little bit, by realizing that the first flight would only bring me to London. The real adventure would only start after that and by the time the real journey started I had gotten over my nervousness and meeting quite a few people on my way here. The security-check at London Heathrow was disastrous. It is an overcrowded airport and everything needs to get out of your bags. Everything, while I had of course also been to the Schiphol security-check and just didn’t believe that it was necessary to get my bags and the content of it through the machine 6 times in a row.
When they were finally convinced that I was not trying to smuggle anything illegal, and I managed to get myself and my suspicious hand luggage into the airplane, I found out that I had the most brilliant seat you could ever wish for on an airplane. It was an aisle seat, next to two empty seats and someone else was sitting on the other aisle. We decided to take shifts sleeping on three of the four seats, so I actually managed to sleep quite well and didn’t even got really jetlagged. Jetlags are, however, a strange phenomenon. Especially when you’ve been in four different time-zones in a 24-hour time span and you wake up in an airplane, while your watch tells you that it is 6PM, but the sun and the clock in the airport have to convince you that it’s actually seven in the morning. Staying awake till the sun finally agrees with you that it is evening, is the best thing to do to get rid of the fatigue and confusion. I felt perfectly fine the next morning. Jetlags are nonsense, but only if you do it right.
