For everybody who believes that a beach is nothing more than a bunch of sand lining up along the biggest salty murky pool of water you’ve ever seen, for everybody who believes that all beaches look alike and therefore for everybody who’s never seen a beach outside the Netherlands, it’s time for the dazzling beauty of Australia’s East-coast beaches.
Not once have I experienced that beaches would actually look different at high tide, than they would at low tide, except for the fact that the strip of sandy land next to the water would be a bit bigger or smaller. Also, I never noticed much difference between going to one beach or the next, or the next, because sand and water will just stay sand and water, wherever you go. Not here.
Rocks, caves, flowers, surf dudes and a beautiful clear sea make everything so much more interesting. And don’t forget about the sun that makes the sea sparkle like in a girl’s children’s book, the beaches are nearly unrecognizable if the second time you go there, the tide is low, while the first time it was high. I’ve got the feeling that I can go to another beach everyday, explore every bit and every piece of it and I will never lose the curiosity about what will be around the next corner. You need to watch the pictures to see what I mean and they don’t do justice to the reality of being surrounded by all the beauty to be explored.
Then there also is the pretty hilarious story of the Dutch girl who was trying to surf. The first time she actually got up on her knees on the board and another wave knocked her over, in all the excitement, she forgot to protect her head with her arms and the surfboard decided to start a furious attack on her head. Which hurt enough to never make her forget to protect her head again, lesson learnt.
In case you didn't notice, that girl was me. Trying to be the die-hard surf chick, I decided to keep trying and it went alright. Not speaking about the part of taking the board into the water, because that took ages and it is a good thing that the surfboard is attached to your ankle by a surfboard leash… Going the other way was going, alright, for a first time, I think. I got to surfing on my knees and then standing up on the board and falling right off again, but hey, I stood up on it. Little less entertaining was the fact that I had to keep up with a terrible headache and an enormous egg on my head for the rest of the week. Serious marks left by my first Australian surfing experience. I’ll get used to the spirit here: “oh, no blood? I’m fine.”
I almost forgot to tell you one last thing. How could I, because I was amazed by the non-pollution on the beaches. I always think that I’m doing pretty good, throwing most of my garbage in the bin, but when I ate an ice-cream and had the stick as a leftover when I wanted to swim, I just pushed it in the sand and the guy I was with picked it up and put in his bag. The near-to-nothing pollution everywhere around here is astounding. Someone had actually been making some sort of art out of the few rubbishy thing that were lying around. We, McDonalds-meals out-of-the-car-window-throwing nation, should take an example of this.

Hai Kirsten,
Wat een mooie foto's en weer een lekker enthousiast verhaal! Gerrit en ik zijn net terug van een week Egypte, maar de stranden daar zagen er iets anders uit. Dus straks ben jij de eerste in de familie die kan surfen! Maar eerst nog even flink oefenen begreep ik uit je verslag. Veel succes op het water en in het gezin natuurlijk.

Hai kirst.
Wat een leuk stukje heb je weer geschreven.Gewoon blijven proberen, dat surfen, de aanhouder wint! Erik en An konden aardig surfen, maar die hebben vorig jaar hun hele uitrusting verkocht, dus helaas voor als je terugkomt aan het eind van de zomer. En dat ''enourmas egg on your head" , ach ja, vervelend, maar ja het is pasen, dus een eitje meer of minder. Het weer is daar ook nog lekker, zo te zien. Beter dan hier met af en toe nog sneeuw en ERG KOUD!! Geniet er lekker van daar, het allerbeste met je (en je hoofdpijn).

Hoi schat, hopelijk blijft het nog heeel lang mooi weer, zodat je nog lang van de mooie stranden kan genieten en veel kan oefenen met surfen! Maar lukt dat niet in de zee, doe je het toch gewoon op het zand! Leuk stuk om de lezen over de mooie australische stranden. Have fun. Liefs van papa, mama en Jim xxx -

Hoi Kirsten,
Ik heb me ook aangemeld zodat ik je verhalen bij ga houden.
Het ziet er allemaal wel erg aantrekkelijk uit daar hoor! Surfen doe toch niet tussen al die grote keien die ik op de foto's zie hè, dan is vallen wel erg pijnlijk toch.
We hebben net een programma op Discovery zitten kijken over de enorme "roadtrains" die in Aus rijden.
Wat een enorme vrachtwagens zijn dat zeg. Heb je die ook al gezien?
En rijden er een beetje Harleys daar, maak er dan maar eens een fototje van.
Nou kom maar op met die verhalen.
Veel plezier daar vanuit een veeeel te koud Breda !

Lieve Kirsten,
Yes,het is gelukt!!Mijn vorige poging lukte niet dus ik dacht dat het aan mijn oude computer lag.Wat een prachtige foto"s heb je laten zien ik denk dat jou vader ter plekke heimwee krijgt.Het reisverslag heb ik nog niet gehad daar trek ik wel een middagje voor uit met hulp van het woordenboek hihi.Ik begrijp dat je het ongelooflijk naar je zin hebt maar dat kan ook niet anders als ik naar het weer en de omgeving kijk.
Je mist niets van hier wat het weer betreft want het is zo koud!!Ik begreep dat je bent begonnen met surfen,als jij het onder de knie hebt en weer naar Nederland komt zal het hier wellicht mooi zijn.
Blijf maar heerlijk genieten van je uitdaging,heel veel plezier!!

Tip: Volgende keer gewoon over de plek wrijven zodra je je hoofd stoot of er een board tegenaan krijgt, dan wordt het geen bult :)
